I found out that this was the name often given to the Southern Cross, a constellation peculiar to the southern climes. Unlike up here in't north, they don't have a pole star to mark the pole. You have to locate the Southern Cross and the pointers, guess a little and bingo, that's the south pole.
Anyway, I'd never done one of these before and was gutted when we found our visit to the outback coincuded with a bloomin full moon, so that's all the star light completely overpowered from the word go. The moon didn't rise here till a bit later so just went for the 3574 second exposure - I realised afterwards it left a lot of hot pixels so will try the multiple exposure route next time.
