    In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the body: in vitro.

    Here, a sperm cell is being inserted into an oocyte (egg cell) via a capillary tube, through the zona pellucida (outer membrane of the egg cell).
