He died before it was completed
. Piano music in the ballroom and the smell of candles have been detected. The ghost of Joan Dunsmuir has been sighted in her bedroom. For some reason, only in winter, the apparition of a woman dressed in white has been seen in the ballroom window.
Craigdarroch Castle is an example of a "bonanza castle", massive houses built for men who became wealthy because of the industrial transformation of North America.
The attention to detail gives the interior of Craigdarroch a warmth throughout and many of the rooms incorporate exotic woods such as walnut, jarra, rosewood, maple, holly, and oak.
