A road that goes where all roads should

I still remember the first time I drove up Steven's Canyon Road in Mt. Rainier National Park. It was the first time I had ever been in the park and I was in the midst of one of those moments, the kind where it very clearly occurs to you just why this particular patch of land earned such national recognition and preservation. The road winds up the sheer side of an enormous canyon, one side dropping off several hundred feet to the distant bottom, at least when you can see it through the racing banks of clouds that go hurtling up the canyon. The other side is sheer cliff that in the spring turns into one impromptu waterfall after the other. The view. The misty clouds. The waterfalls. The sinuous road matched perfectly with the landscape. Even the occasional falling rock. It is a heady mix that I feel still every time I drive up it. And this most recent trip was no different.
