Abert's desert

I recently drove the Beartooth Highway. I had never really heard of it and the travel book I found it referenced it claimed that the stretch of road had been billed as the most beautiful in the U.S. Naturally, I was a bit skeptical because I have seen some beautiful stretches of road, such as where this pano was made along 395 running next to the Abert Rim in southern Oregon. But my skepticism was quickly won over and now I have been mulling whether or not it lives up to its superlative claim. In my opinion, I think Hwy 101 along the west coast still tops my list, but then again I must have ocean water in my blood for the love I bear of the Pacific. But then there is also Hwy 89 running out of Page, Arizona and the Stevens Canyon Rd up Mt. Rainier. The Historic Columbia River Hwy is also hard to beat, particularly in the fall. And countless little roads snaking through the Vermont forest that I drove a few years ago. And to think of all the roads I have not even been on yet! No, I will have to ponder this thought a bit longer I think and perhaps resort to collecting more data, if you know what I mean. ;-)
