One of the best places to visit in the DPRK is the Pyongyang Maternity
Hospital. While not up to western standards, it is a glimpse into another
aspect of the DPRK. It is a showplace of medical care yet one at times can
see through the facade.

Pyongyang Maternity Hospital 30 Years Old
Pyongyang, March 7 (KCNA) -- The women in the DPRK call the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital their parents' home. The hospital is marking the 30th anniversary of its founding.
The hospital, a modern comprehensive healthcare center for women, has served a total of more than 6,730,000 women.
Under the profound loving care of General Secretary Kim Jong Il the hospital has a well-regulated system whereby women in childbed are provided with wild honey and efficacious medicines by the state free of charge.
He has continued sending modern medical facilities and apparatuses and expensive medicines to the hospital, helping it consolidate its material and technical foundation. Besides, he has sent a lot of tonic such as more than 130 tons of wild honey, deer's placenta pastes, bear's galls and pine-nuts in more than 100 installments.
The amount of wild honey sent to the hospital in last February reached nearly eight tons.
There are too many legendary stories to tell in the era of the Workers' Party of Korea that planes flew and ambulance cars ran to bring ordinary women to hospitals from solitary islets and remote villages of the country.
A south Korean woman, who came to Pyongyang to watch extravaganza "Arirang", gave an easy birth at the above-said hospital, receiving from all the Koreans delighted at the news the best wishes for a happy future of the child symbolic of reunification.
More than 7 000 foreign women have been given help in childbirth and obstetrical and gynecological treatment at the hospital thanks to the medical care of socialist Korea.
They were unsparing in their praises of the hospital, saying that it is an icon of socialism as it translates the beautiful dream of human beings into a reality.
