1936 Austin 12/4 'Low Loader' taxi
The first motorised taxi was introduced in London in 1903. They superseded horse drawn cabs, which had almost completely disappeared from the city's streets by the 1920s. By 1939, the number of motorised taxis in London had grown to 8,000.
This Austin Low Loader taxi was introduced in 1936. It represents a typical 1930s London cab, with its folding roof and space for four passengers. Luggage would have been stowed beside the driver.
