NT$70/US$2.13. Roast duck and roast pork over rice.

 

This is the best roast duck I've tried so far in Taipei. I haven't tried many, but all the ones before this one were absolute crap. This comes closest to what authentic HK-style roast duck and pork should taste like. The duck skin is nice and crisp, the meat is juicy and the flavors are spot on. The only problem is that while they nailed the authenticity of the meats, the rice platter has been "Taiwan-ized" [1][2]. There's this scallion sauce on top which, while tasty, is completely Taiwanese tasting. Plus, it comes with a bunch of sides like in a Taiwanese-style bento lunch. If I go again, I would ask for just the roast duck and pork over rice, skip the Taiwanese sides and the scallion sauce.

[1] In Taiwan, we call this phenomenon as being very "Tai" (as in "Tai"-wan). So you would say something like: that dish/person/thing is sooo Tai...

 

[2] I suppose you have to cater to your clientele and I know this happens in all countries, but it's exceedingly hard to find any type of foreign cuisine in Taipei that hasn't been heavily altered to suit the local palate (at least harder than I think it should be in a city that aspires to be cosmopolitan). The population simply isn't diverse or sophisticated enough to demand authenticity in foreign cuisines.
