Just a Building?
There’s no need to get too excited. This is just a building, with the same functionality as any other. However, the Cibeles Palace is one of Madrid’s best known landmarks. With its giant façade and its keep towers, the Palace resembles a castle even though it’s just a palace of bureaucracy – Madrid’s City Hall (and formerly, the headquarters of the postal service). As you walk down the street from behind it, with each footstep more of its striking façade creeps into view, and the place looks bloody brilliant at night. With just a smattering of floodlights carefully positioned in different spots around the building’s exterior, the illumination blends more nicely with the night sky than if you were lighting the whole thing. In theory, this makes it easier to photograph as well. Taken on 5 February 2012.
