Demilitarisation made easy
Thanks to the two tall buildings surrounding it, the Plaza de España should never be too difficult to find. Indeed the two buildings are an ideal point of navigation from certain locations in Madrid. The square itself once you get to it is a nice enough hangout – bar the cold weather. For that reason, there’s not that many people around today. The plaza is so gentrified today, that it’s hard to believe that it was once a military barracks – installed to defend the nearby Palacio Real. The square’s present appearance dates from the Franco period – and it kind of shows a bit, with its Utopian appearance. Taken on 5 February 2012.
