La Virgen Indígena

By Zapatista artist Petul, 2006 When the Spanish conquistadores invaded Mexico, they brought Franciscans and Dominican friars to spread Catholicism and rid Mexico of its heathen religions. The Dominicans, who tended to dominate in southern Mexico (including Oaxaca and Chiapas) were especially harsh in their efforts to wipe out competing belief systems. Finally an indigenous man had a vision of an indigenous Virgin...who became the icon for Mexico, the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Virgin and her little angels are wearing the Zapatista bandana.
