Ruth Chatterton, American stage and film actress, 1892-1961. This original portrait of Ruth Chatterton was taken at the Nalinger studio during the Chicago run of "Daddy Long-Legs," March to September,1914. The opening tour of "Daddy Long-Legs," a play written by Jean Webster based on her best selling 1912 novel, was produced by American theater legend Henry Miller, with Ruth Chatterton in her first solo starring role. It was the biggest success of her early career and made her a star of the first magnitude in American theater. The production played in five cities before reaching Chicago in March, 1914, were it was greeted with critical acclaim and was so popular that it remained in that city for over six months, delaying its Broadway premiere until late September. It was as well received on Broadway, where it remained until the following May before going back on the road, touring the US and Canada for the next year and a half.
