The eastern gate of York leading to the roads to Hull, Beverley and the East Coast. Now not much used.
This view is from the inside of the city outwards... and surprisingly little has changed. Cars, of course, in place of pedestrians and a horse/mule, the shop on the left has gone and some new shops have appeared through the gate (one is a kebab and fish & chip restaurant). Traffic lights now guard a busy junction with the inner ring road and Lawrence Street outside the gate, and the pilasters on the gatehouse have been painted white!
