King's Day (27th April) is the national holiday of the Netherlands. Normally the Dam Square in the heart of the city center of Amsterdam would be overcrowded with people celebrating the birthday of King Willem Alexander. That was not the case this time.
The Royal Palace was built between 1648 and 1655 as the new town hall of Amsterdam. The architect was Jacob van Campen (1596-1657). Since 1808 the building is the official palace of the Dutch royal family.
