Howard Johnson's is some sort of strange Fantasyland. I love how dressed up they all are and that everyone looks like they are happy and securely in the middle class, including the mother and daughter in the front who look like African-Americans. And they are somehow all thin and have nice-looking cars. On the other hand, what kind of resturaunt grills your hotdog in butter (???) and then puts it in a big, fat piece of sliced bread?

The classic Howard Johnsons restaurant was a great hybrid of lunch counter and family restaurant. When the parents of Boomers were looking for places to take their families the HoJos there.
People forget that HoJo was the original place to get multiple flavors of ice cream, long before Baskin-Robbins and Bresslers. 28 if I recall correctly. I liked their mint chip.
Oh man, I'd forgotten about their way of serving hot dogs and brats.
The kid's menu was oval and was scored so that kids would punch out a few sections and transform it into a cap.
HoJos died when the new corporate management lost interest in the restaurants. Chefs at individual restaurants were fired and replaced by short order cooks who increasing just reheated standardized portions sent from a central kitchen.

I so fondly remember those hot dogs served in the cardboard sleeve.

Many years ago I read that the genesis of HoJo's restaurants was that Howard Johnson was able to make the restaurants in his lodgings profitable, in an era when the hospitality industry considered food service as a necessary, unprofitable evil.
