      I think the fact that they still interrupted the action with adverts should have been a bit of a tip-off.

      I've heard the tape of the broadcast many times. After each break the announcer clearly stated that it was a radio play. The claimed numbers of people believing the show was reality has inched up over the years and actual reports by police departments of citizens calling in panic and investigations of "Alien Landings" are very few. I think time has generated a greater deal of hyperbole than the actual broadcast.
