Airfield Mainz-Finthen: Gyrocopter
This tiny but fascinating aircraft looks like a helicopter at first sight. But there is a fundamental difference: it is not propelled by the large rotor but only by the small propeller in the rear. The rotor is only passively moved by the airstream when the gyrocopter rolls (or flies) forward. Only when there is sufficient forward motion the rotation of the airfoils produces enough ascending force to make the gyrocopter fly. This one is operated commercially - the pilot can only take one passenger at a time with him. Together they travel in the open air like on a flying motor scooter. Must be an interesting feeling!
I took this photograph on the former American air base Mainz-Finthen (now a civil airfield). From there we started our flight with the historic Junker Ju 52 airplane.
