SR 20 Frostad Road to Sharpe's Corner paving
The pavement on the SR 20 Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridges is worn out, with ruts, cracks and potholes marring the surface. In summer 2015 WSDOT will repave several sections of SR 20 between Frostad Road on Whidbey Island and Sharpes Corner in Fidalgo Island. Most of this area last was paved between 1994 and 1996. On average about 18,000 vehicles use this highway daily; during the summer tourism season it’s much higher. While the work will be done at night to reduce traffic delays, one impact is inevitable: Work on the Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridges will require up to five overnight full closures, likely between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The bridge’s driving surface is only about 22 feet wide, which is too narrow to allow regular traffic on the bridges during the paving work. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed on the bridge during the closure. WSDOT is working with the Navy, Washington State Parks, law enforcement, emergency services, major employers and local governments to plan for the road work and its impacts.
