SR 520 Bridge: Pontoon W Float-In
Crews floated the second massive concrete pontoon through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 14. Pontoon W is a cross pontoon, which will form one end of the floating bridge.

The first pontoon arrived the evening of Saturday, Aug. 11. A total of 77 pontoons will make the journey through the end of 2014, when crews target opening the new floating bridge on Lake Washington.

After nearly 15 years of engineering and analysis, WSDOT is under construction on a new SR 520 floating bridge. The new bridge will better withstand windstorms, includes dedicated lanes for buses and carpools, adds a new bicycle/pedestrian path, and builds shoulders for moving collisions safely out of traffic.
