I-5 Ship Canal Noise Study
The I-5 Ship Canal Bridge, in Seattle, is undergoing a renovation in an effort to cut down on the loud highway traffic noise and provide relief to local residents and businesses nearby. We are installing approximately 700 noise-absorptive ceiling panels on the south end of the bridge between E. Gwinn Place and E. Allison Street. The panels will be hung vertically on the outer edges of the ceiling. They are designed to absorb and block some of the reflected traffic noise that bounces off the ceiling of the express lanes and into the surrounding neighborhoods. This noise-absorptive ceiling treatment is a new and innovative method for monitoring traffic noise. We will monitor noise levels before and after installing the test section to see whether the ceiling panels help reduce the highway traffic noise and determine if they should be used in future projects.
