I-405 connects drivers across Lake Washington and throughout the Puget Sound region, providing access to major employers like Boeing, Microsoft, and PACCAR. However a daily 6-10 hours of traffic congestion chokes the full potential of this artery — and the economic potential of the Puget Sound region. I-405 congestion costs millions in lost time, wasted fuel and missed opportunities.

Since the master plan for I-405 improvements was adopted in 2002, the strategy has been to fund groups of projects that directly address the worst congestion chokepoints first, coordinating all transportation modes into a working system. With the 2003 Nickel and 2005 Transportation Partnership Account, the state has invested nearly $1.5 billion into the corridor. Since 2002, WSDOT has delivered 13 projects on the I-405/SR 167 corridor.
