Bertha sets sail – SR 99 tunneling machine heads for Seattle

Bertha, the five-story-tall machine that will dig the SR 99 tunnel beneath downtown Seattle, leaves Osaka, Japan aboard the Jumbo Fairpartner on March 19, 2013. Crews in Seattle will reassemble the machine’s 41 pieces in an 80-foot-deep pit to the east of Terminal 46. Tunneling is scheduled to start in summer 2013. Manufactured by Hitachi Zosen Corp., Bertha is the world’s largest-diameter tunneling machine.
