SR 99 S. Holgate to S. King Street Viaduct Replacement Archaeological Dig-5

An archaeologist working for WSDOT sifts through soil looking for historical items during a May 25, 2010, excavation on the site of the SR 99 - S Holgate Street to S King Street Viaduct Replacement project. Archaeologists excavated several trenches west of First Avenue S. where a neighborhood stood during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This small neighborhood was abandoned around 1905, when it was filled with dirt and turned into a rail yard. By recovering the items in advance of construction, we are ensuring that the archaeological record will not be affected by work to replace the south end of the viaduct.
