May 2018 SB I-5 traffic switch in Tacoma

As early as May 1, southbound I-5 drivers will be relocated onto a temporary alignment at the SR 16 interchange in Tacoma.


Travelers will see the following temporary changes as a result of the traffic shift.


The three southbound through-lanes of I-5 (shown in blue) will move to the southeast immediately adjacent to northbound I-5. Barriers will separate the two directions of traffic.


The southbound I-5 exit to South 38th Street will stay in its current location, which will make it northwest of the construction zone.


Travelers headed to southbound I-5 from State Route 7, I-705 and Pacific Avenue will follow the South 38th Street exit to rejoin southbound I-5. This movement is shown in green on the graphic.


Eastbound SR 16 travelers (shown in yellow) will not have access to westbound South 38th Street. They will detour to S. 56th Street.
