: Removing Bertha’s starting blocks

In this Feb. 26, 2014, photo, workers head into the SR 99 tunnel through the temporary tunnel rings that supported Bertha’s initial drive. Crews are removing the rings and the steel jacking frame (at bottom left and right) as part of the effort to transform the launch pit into the double-decked roadway that takes northbound down into the tunnel and southbound traffic up to the surface. Learn more about the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program at or follow Bertha on Twitter @BerthaDigsSR99.
