Republic of Maldives is also generally known as the Maldives Islands. This is a cluster of beautiful islands lying in the Indian Ocean. The Minicoy Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep of India is also among these islands.
Maldives gained complete independence in 1965. Before this time, it existed in the form of colonies. Maldives Islands lie in the Laccadive Sea, approximately 400 km south-west of India and about 700 km south-west of Sri Lanka. Before achieving full independence, Maldives Islands were colonized. The Dutch referred to Maldives as “Maldivische Eilanden.” The name “Maldives Islands” was given to it by the British but later it converted to just “Maldives.”
Portugal, Britain and the Netherlands ruled Maldives during the colonial times. On attaining independence, Maldives was run by a strict government and a sultanate. Its official religion is Islam and practicing other religions openly is forbidden in Maldives. The capital of Maldives is its largest city Male. It is also among the Administrative divisions of the Maldives Islands.
Maldives is not a very highly populated country. It is very small in terms of both area as well as population. The population of Male was around 103,693 according to the 2006 census. Maldives is also the lowest lying country in the world. It has the lowest naturally occurring highest point worldwide which is at 2.4 meters or approximately 7 feet and 10 inches. Citizens of Maldives are particularly concerned about its inundation. Maldives has a very pleasant climate ranging between 24ºC and 33ºC.
