Meteor over La Silla

The centre of the galaxy was rising during this hour-long exposure, which was not long enough to completely smear out the dark lane of dust that dims the view towards the middle of the Milky Way. As the Earth moved through space during this shot, a speck of dust much less than a millimetre across that had probably been minding its own business for quite a few million years happened to cross our path. It left its mark on my film as it burned up, miles up in the sky over the Atacama.
