Astronomy on Mouna Kea

What you are seeing are the two W. M. Keck Observatories. The two 10-meter telescopes are operated by and from Caltech and University of California. The smaller telescope on the right is NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility. Its 3.0-meter diameter infrared telescope operated by University of Hawaii for NASA.

In the far distance is Haleakala on the island of Maui.

Because of its high altitude, thin and clean air, and great distance from urban areas, the summit of Mouna Kea supports by far the largest astronomical facility in the world. It is home to the world's most powerful telescopes and astronomical observatories, including the Keck telescope which has the world's largest mirror.
