Swan Family 081
Out on today's walk and came across our wonderful Swan Family, all lying on the grass, apart from Dad, who was standing guard by the path next to the canal. The wee ones were preening themselves then curling up for a little nap, adorable, and a lovely way to start today's stroll.
The only bad thing was that no less than three times in the short while I was there, people let their dogs run off the leash, and the dogs ran right at the cygnets, eliciting a pretty strong response from Mum and Dad hissing and lunging at the dogs.
The dogs weren't attacking, they were playing, but the swans don't know that. Not the dog's fault but stupid owners allowing them to run free near wildlife, especially when they have young and will be all the more defensive. One idiot let his collie rush into the group, with the Mum and Dad swan chasing the dog away, while a number of us shouted at him to control his dog near other animals - he seemed more angry that we dared to tell him off! Some people are just irresponsible idiots. This stretch of the canal at this time of year has swans with cygnets, duck and ducklings and moorhens with their chicks, it's not a place to let a dog run off the leash.
