Industrial Sky Forest at Night 02
Another view from Calton Hill, this time the massive construction site that is the former Saint James Centre, a not at all loved concrete monstrosity that should never have existed in the first place (older buildings on this site on the east edge of the historic New Town were allowed to deteriorate then be demolished), a hideous, butt-ugly grey concrete shopping centre and hotel.
It was demolished a couple of years ago and a new set of buildings are now being constructed on this site, hence the sky forest of cranes in these shots taken about 40 minutes apart. Some of the proposed new buildings, including a tall hotel with a copper "ribbon" curling around it (models of which attracted the name "the dog turd" in the local press!) have also attracted some hostile responses.
Given the vanished older building and this new one taking shape are on part of a UNCESCO World Heritage Site you can imagine many of us are wary of what is built in this important historic area (and we should be watching, it can't just be left to developers). Still, while we wait for this new addition to the Edinburgh city centre this forest of cranes makes for a good photo subject, especially at dusk and night!
