opened in 1911, the oxford street picture house was one of manchester finest early cinemas, it was soon joined by the next door gaumont (built on the site of the hippodrome theatre) and the paramount (odeon) across the street, as well as the regal twin just down the road (opposite the bbc - now the dancehouse theatre).
in 1960 the by then new oxford picturehouse became part of the rank circuit and gradually slipped in programming and condition as more screens were added to the odeon, it finally closed in 1980. derelict for around 10 years it finally became a mcdonalds on the ground floor with training offices upstairs where some of the original barrel vaulted ceiling plasterwork is rumoured to survive.

Used to go there often for films - a lovely old cosy cinema.

Do you have any shots of the Cameo just along the street?

dont think there were any cameo cinemas in manchester.
cinemas on the st peters street/oxford street strip were:
      - theatre royal/cinerama/buckingham bingo/discoteque royale
      - folleys varities/winter gardens
      - paramount/odeon
      - tatler/classic/cornerhouse
      - oxford/new oxford/oxford odeon
      - regal twin/studio 1-5/dancehouse
      - grosvenor
      - grand/palladium/peter st picturehouse/futurist
      - midland hotle cinema
      - gaiety
      - gaumont/rotters
      - la scala/roxy/plaza
      and finally,
amc great northern 16 - a rather poor substitue

Took some time but found it! There was also on Oxford Road - opposite the Odeon - the Manchester News Theatre, later the Manchester Film Theatre (run by bfi), later the Jacey Film Theatre and finally from 1973 to 1981 when the cinema closed, the Cameo! The building has now been demolished.

Still have not found a decent picture though!

I have fond memories of seeing "Close Encounters" here on it's 1st release along with a 1980 release of "Tommy". The sound on the latter blew me away.
