Asperitas Cloud, formerly Undulatus Asperatus

An amazing sky taken off the deck of a rental home in Hanmer, NZ.

NASA wrote me and asked if they could use this photo as their Astronomy Picture of the Day. I naturally said YES!!!! Here's the link: apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130227.html They said they get about a million views a day... Posted Feb 27, 2013.

And then on April 17, 2016, they posted this photo again.

In 2017 Asperitas (with an i) Cloud will be designated as new cloud formation.. it will be the first cloud formation added since cirrus intortus in 1951 to the International Cloud Atlas of the World Meteorological Organization.. The name translates approximately as "roughness".
