May 2012 468 Dodecatheon meadia - Shooting stars or American Cowslips
It's the first time I've grown these. I got the seed of both these species from a seed exchange in January 2010 and sowed them immediately outside in a cold frame. I have to admit I neglected them after the 1st year when nothing much had happened but this spring they've produced these lovely flowers. They belong to the primula family and grow best in partial shade and are found in a number of different habitats including saline swamps, mountains, meadows, streams, plains, alpine zones, damp grassland, high alpine meadows and high altitudes, occasional woodland. Native in N. America they also grow in Canada, Alaska, Mexico. They are said to be very beautiful growing en masse. My contact Ron posted a very beautiful shot of them the other day. This one also comes in white and has been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit in the UK.
Thank you to those who have made me their contact. Due to poor health, eye problems and low energy I regret I can't take on any new contacts but nearly always manage to reply to your comments. Please no more than 1 invite.
