@mickipedia at the roller derby

I took this picture with my HTC Incredible's camera. I turned off the flash, and just tried to keep Micki in the center of the frame while she went speeding by me on the track. I'd hoped to get her in perfect focus with the blurred background, but I'm still very happy with how this turned out.

As I told my friend Alan, I can't believe I got a picture like this with my cell phone.

it's tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme, that's right, on time, ITS TRICKY!

    (i.e. nice moves)

This is called panning and it's very impressive that it came from your phone.

Thats a pretty cool shot with your cell...With good light HTC's cameras do a pretty good job at snapping pics.

@Eeek5127 It's actually pretty easy to do a pan-shot with a Dslr,it's all in the way you can hold the camera vs the way you can hold a cellphone.

This rivals some of the shots I took of our local roller derby team yesterday. And I had a couple of thousand dollars worth of gear.

    But you weren't Wil Wheaton.
  • Andreas Beck 5y

    Well done indeed.

One of the most incredible cell phone shots I've seen. HTC rocks it.

Great photo! And Wil, I love it that you're a derby fan now!

    Neato!

That's a great shot for just trying it. I ref derby, and take pics occasionally, and those are hard to get! Funny, I've just been following all the fun you and Scalzi have been having, and found this while searching for a picture to use in a derby program. An, geek overlap...

Yay! Thanks for coming out, Wil and for your AWESOME blog post!

You should check out Charlie Chu's photos from the bout.

I can't wait till I'm back down in LA taking photos of the Derby Dolls myself.

you did a great job, those pan shots are hella difficult with skaters, you are lucky to get 1 in 50 decent shots
  • Wil McQueen 5y

It's always hard to get a keeper when you have milliseconds to work with. Taking photos of my dogs and have the shot before they've moved has been a task but when the great shot is captured, it's all worth the effort. When there's a Wil, there's a way! ;)

I was shooting the TXRD Lonestar girls Saturday & would have been happy with a shoot like that. Glad you enjoyed your first derby game.

Panning focus is tricky to do, even with an SLR, but doing it with a phone where you have no manual control over the settings is stupidly hard. Congrats on getting a cool shot regardless.

Also, Roller Derby is teh awesomz
  • laura ammons 5y

that is incredible. i fail at panning.
  • AmandaLeeeee 5y

I'm kinda jealous of you going to one of the good derby's in the States, the females there are much tougher than us Canadian's :P Must be the rules though. -Shakes fist-
