Hanauma Bay - Oahu Hawaii
"The climate at Hanauma Bay is hot and dry. Because there is no fresh water it is unlikely that anyone lived at the bay in ancient times, but Hawaiians certainly fished there. In 1952, archeologists excavating a shelter cave behind the beach found remnants of ancient campfires, fishhooks, and other tools. The bay and the volcanic formations around it also figure in old Hawaiian legends, and there are several accounts of how Hanauma Bay got its name. The word hana means “bay.” The word uma has several meanings, one being “curved.” One translation of Hanauma is therefore “curved bay,” certainly appropriate. (The name is pronounced “ha-now-ma,” with the accent on “now.”)"
