This hollow sycamore is the third generation tree that provided a home for settlers near the Buckhannon River in West Virginia. John and Samuel Pringle were the first settlers. Deserters from the British-American forces mustered at Fort Pitt, Pittsburgh, during the French and Indian War, found the wilderness along with the river ideal for hiding. They lived there from 1764 through 1767.
