Independence Day

West Virginia Veterans Memorial

State Capitol Complex

Charleston, West Virginia

Instead of posting a fireworks shot for the 4th Of July, I thought I would post an image that would convey more of a meaning of this national holiday. As part of the State Capitol Complex this two-story oval shaped monument, composed of four limestone monoliths surrounded by a reflecting pool is the West Virginia Veterans Memorial. Containing over 10,000 names etched into polished granite, it honors the West Virginians who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending the nation in twentieth century conflicts. The names seen here are the names of men who gave their lives during World War I. Without the sacrifice of the men and women through the centuries and not only from West Virginia but from across our nation we would not know the meaning of freedom.

I will have to say I'm not normally a fan of monuments but I was quite impressed with this one. If you've ever in Charleston this is another must see when you're there. It's really cool.
