Fort Matanzas

Ft. Matanzas National Monument

Crescent Beach, Florida

Built by the Spanish to defend the Matanzas inlet 14 miles south of St. Augustine. It defended the city from a southern sneak attack. Completed in 1742 it was abandoned in 1819 when the United States was transfered the possession of Florida. Near this sight 114 French were slaughtered in 1564 by the Spanish. Hence the name matanzas meaning slaughters.
