Piet - my - vrou

The title is what we call him in SA, derived from the call.

Also the name I often call my wife, since her name is Pietta. When we hear then calling the first time in late September or early October, we know that summer is here. They migrate all the way from the northern hemisphere.

Red-chested Cuckoo - Cucculus gularis - 32-34 cm

An enigmatic bird, rarely seen, and only fleetingly in most instances. They are summer visitors and are boord parasites.

They belong to Family Cuculidae and have zygodactylous feet - two toes pointing backwards & two forwards.

Shot in the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden about 2km form where I stay. I was walking on the forest path next to the Crocodile river when I noticed him foraging in front of me. I have just completed setting down the tripod, when he alighted on the rail next to the path. I got one shot, no time for composition, and this is it, nearly a mug shot.
