Industry is targeting the Mancos shale for oil development, a previously untapped formation that has only recently become economically and technically viable. Exploiting shale requires horizontal drilling and extensive fracking. As the surge to develop Mancos shale increases, the Greater Chaco region is at risk like never before. Culturally significant areas like Chaco Culture National Historic Park and Navajo communities in the area stand to endure the brunt of this industrialization.

Sadly, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, our nation's public lands agency, is behind approving most of this development. This is a vivid example of how our public lands are being sacrificed for fossil fuels by the Bureau of Land Management.
