Above the West Elk Coal Mine, Colorado, August 18, 2011
Methane venting wells above the West Elk coal mine in the North Fork Valley of Gunnison County, Colorado (just east of Paonia). Also some shots of the Sunset Trail Roadless Area, a wild area next to the West Elk Wilderness that Arch Coal wants to mine under and build methane drainage wells within. Already, the mine vents 17.7 million cubic feet of methane daily. Methane is not only a valuable product, it's a potent greenhouse gas--17.7 million cubic feet equals more than 2.6 million tons of carbon dioxide. WildEarth Guardians is in court to rein in out of control coal mining and safeguard the climate.
