Here is Another Picture of My Brown Recluse Spider Bite

    Newer Older

This was toward the end when I could walk again. I got bitten on May 31, 2004 and this was taken on July 31 just to give you an idea of the amount of time involved. The black part (necrotized, mummified tissue) was surgically removed about a month later, the day that I was laid off from my government contract job. I still have the chunk, about the size of a potato chip.

Today there is a giant scar there and I still have little sensation in my ankle.

Wear boots and long pants if possible on a nature hike. Forget spiders, worry about snakes!!

It's a roll of the dice. I work in landscaping, and I've carried juniper bushes in wheelbarrows all day, and at the end of the day, the wheelbarrow has ten black widows. Black widows are very timid and try to get away. Brown recluses are mean and ornery and willcome at you.

Hopefully you gave that spider food poisoning and he was crapping and barfing for a few days and groaning to his buddies that he wished he was dead. Meanwhile, back to reality, it is strange that such a tiny spider should need such toxic venom to exist. What was this species eating 50 million years ago? I think spider venom liquifies its prey and then they drink it up, but man that's a big slurpee for such a small spider.

The flesh looks like the cover of the Necronomicon from Army of Darkness.

Maybe that's what the book's bound from...spider-bite induced necrotized shin-skin.

Wanted to find out how long after the bite did you get treatment. I have a friend that's in the hospital right now and she got bit on Jan. 1 '09, but didn't go to the hospital until the 10th. Her foot is swollen, the area where she was bitten is already necrotized and is draining. They haven't done anything to her foot yet because her blood work is all messed up. What exactly did the doctors do to you? Xray, MRI, debridement?? I'm afraid she may lose her foot, if they don't do anything soon. Thanks

I got a brown recluse spider bite on my thigh in February of this year. I got lucky though, the infected area was only about the size of a quarter rather than a potato chip and my parents are both doctors so I got it pretty well treated. The necrotized flesh debrided itself with the bandage one day and now it's just a big scar. Since it was on my thigh the affected area was mostly fatty and while a big chunk of dead fat disappeared it only took me completely out of commission for about a week.

When I mentioned this to my friend he told me I was just like his hero, Jeffrey Rowland.
