Mission San Fernando Rey de España

The 17th of the 21 California Missions established by the Spanish Franciscan friars, Mission San Fernando was founded on Sept 8, 1789 by Friar Fermín Lasuén in honor of Ferdinand III of Castile in the sunny valley he gave the same name. The mission soon grew to a peak of some 1000 Tataviam and Tongv neophytes, a number which remained constant during the early 19th century. This building is a replica of the third church, built to replace original church was destroyed in the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake. The third church, built in 1812, had previously barely survived the 1812 Wrightwood Earthquake.
