Controlled burn in the Apalachicola National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service burns longleaf pine habitat along State Road 65 in Liberty County. Burning the forest clears out oaks and titi, making room for wiregrass and succulent plants which support diverse animal species.

Fire also benefits the ecosystems that fringe the pine flatwoods, such as the bogs in which carnivorous plants are found.
