Pitcher plant leaf samples

Collected by Dr. Tom Miller. The clearest liquid (second from the right) is from a newer leaf, while the darkest (left) is from the oldest. The clear liquid contains mosquito larvae while the darker liquid has decomposing animal material. Dr. Miller studies the communities of animals and bacteria that live in and make use of the interior of the pitcher plant leaf.
