Day 102 - West Midlands Police - Operational Support Unit

This photo shows an officer from our Operational Support Unit using specialist cutting equipment to gain access to a Cannabis Factory in Saltley, Birmingham.

The Operations Support Unit (OSU) is a uniformed department made up of officers with a wide range of specialist skills. The OSU is the West Midlands Police force strategic reserve, for major and serious incidents.

They are trained to a high level in various method of entry skills.

The team has the capability to use their method of entry skills to enter through composite doors, glass, iron gates, walls, and many other obstacles.

Approximately 400 cannabis plants were discovered inside this premises along with heat lamps, fans and hydroponics equipment.

Five drying racks containing cannabis were also discovered and the electricity supply within the building had been tampered with.

This image forms part of the West Midlands Police 'Photo of the Day 2012' project.

We will be adding a new photo every day of the year to highlight the breadth of work carried out by police officers and staff across the West Midlands.
