I spotted a pair of Golden-crowned Kinglets flitting about in a tree with yellowish fruit while I was visiting the state arboretum. It was my first visit, and I was surprised at how extensive it was, and the variety of habitats.
My friend William Leigh and I were particularly interested in winter finches that had been seen there recently feeding in evergreens. We saw a White-winged Crossbill and some Pine Siskins, but missed the Common Redpoll that was reported earlier in the week.
We also were treated to a Loggerhead Shrike in the meadows and a pair of Rusty Blackbirds at the wetlands along with a Swamp Sparrow.
