A Royal Train

Inspection Saloon 975025 'Caroline' was built at Eastleigh as DEMU vehicle S60755 for the Hastings line on the Southern Region back in 1958.

Around 1978 she was retired and became the Southern Region General Manager's saloon because her "Hastings gauge" allowed her to take the General Manager throughout the region.

After the Royal Wedding of 1981 Princess Diana and Prince Charles left London by train on the way to their honeymoon. That train was 975025.

She appeared quite unexpectedly on Platform 1 at Westbury at 1008 today, 17th March 2009. Loaded to the brim (or so she seemed) with railmen and rather nice tea services.

She was being drawn by 37423.

Her arrival at the platform wasn't announced, and those of us waiting for the 1008 to Cardiff Central heard a rumour going round that it was a "railwaymen's day trip to Penzance - look at all those cups of tea!".

She headed off shortly afterwards in a westerly direction...

I felt my purchase of the little DMC-FS3 was amply justified by this one.
