Mono Lake Tufa With Swifts

The rock formations are called 'tufa'. They are created from calcium salts that are precipitated from mineral springs entering the lake bed and rising upward. They have been exposed by the dramatic lowering of the lake level since Los Angeles water department started diverting the streams that feed the lake for city use.
