Stalagmite formation in (very slow!) action

I always thought stalagmites pushed up from the ground, hence my pneumonic device about them "pushing up with all their might."


The truth is, stalagmites are formed from water that slowly drips onto the cave floor, over thousands of years. Limestone stalactites form extremely slowly – usually less than 10cm every thousand years.
